Rocketship Public Schools is seeking an experienced and innovative leader to serve in a newly created position as its Chief Schools Officer (CSO). Founded in 2007, Rocketship is a network of nonprofit, public K through 5 charter schools currently serving nearly 9,000 primarily low-income students enrolled in 19 schools located in neighborhoods where access to excellent schools is limited. Rocketship employs a total staff of approximately 1,000 leaders, comprised of teaching, non-instructional leaders, school leaders and network support professionals.
Launched in San Jose, Rocketship has impacted the lives of over 15,000 students nationwide and has transformed San Jose into one of the nation's highest performing urban charter sectors. Rocketship consistently ranks in the top 10% for academic performance statewide in comparison to schools serving a similar student population. Rocketship currently has schools in five regions: Nashville, Milwaukee, Washington D.C., East Bay (Bay Area), and San Jose. Over the next five years, Rocketship aims to double in size from its current 19 schools.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a strategic partner, the CSO will help to refine, innovate upon, and scale the Rocketship instructional model to achieve the organization's collective mission to eliminate the achievement gap in historically underserved communities. Based in either the Bay Area or Washington DC, the CSO will manage Rocketship's schools and achievement teams, make Rocketship a model for personalized learning and student achievement performance among charter schools and traditional districts, and help Rocketship replicate its catalytic impact in San Jose in each of its current and future regions. The CSO will strategically advise the CEO and the Board on the personalized learning model and student achievement results of the organization.
The ideal candidate will have direct school leadership experience and will have developed and/or led an instructional model that realized high levels of student achievement in an organization similar in scope and scale to Rocketship. The CSO will have experience leading and expanding a multi-site/multi-regional enterprise and interacting effectively with senior leadership, school-level administrators, teachers and school based staff, donors, and members of a board of directors. The CSO will lead a 42+ person team of unbelievably talented, committed, and mission-driven school leaders and educators. The CSO will be a strong, transformational leader with a proven ability to lead and garner support from a diverse set of constituents, as well as a record of genuine performance and impact against ambitious goals. Candidates must demonstrate a passion for public education, proven experience in realizing strong student achievement results in low-income communities, a track-record of developing leaders, and have tangible success in leading a complex organization.
We are seeking individuals with a belief in the mission and personalized instructional model of Rocketship and the ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, flexible and autonomous environment. The CSO will possess excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills and have the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, the school network, and external stakeholders. Experience in an organization experiencing emerging growth and playing a key role in driving that growth is required, as well as the ability to implement professional and leadership development curricula delivered to a team of dedicated and energetic professionals who truly want to make a difference in the lives of the students they serve. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree and or Administrative Services Credential preferred.
