Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) is a large, national nonprofit organization headquartered in Silver Spring, MD whose mission is to promote intercultural understanding and exchange through experiential travel. Founded in 1934, HI-USA delivers its mission through a network 50 youth hostels, the delivery of educational programs, and engagement with local community members and travelers.
The Development Director, will work with the senior leadership team to identify contributed funding needs, preferred funding targets, and best approaches. This person will grow the organization’s resource activities by establishing a strategy and structure for effective ongoing fund development and provide overall leadership to ensure optimal results. Key responsibilities in this role will include creating, nurturing, and stewarding a portfolio of ongoing relationships with current donors and major giving prospects, while also growing HI-USA’s base of support among individuals, charitable foundations, corporations, and other partners.
Research, prospect, and apply to multiple donor sources
Develop and write grant proposals for major national initiatives and assist with other regional proposals as needed
Plan and execute capital campaigns and ongoing annual fundraising efforts, including planned and major gifts
Create and maintain ongoing relationships with donors and major giving prospects
Assess the organization’s fundraising performance against the annual budget and annual work plan, as well as the organization’s long-term strategic plan
Stay current with industry ethics and best practices in resource development and ensure organization-wide implementation of those standards
Collaborate and develop comprehensive marketing campaigns to promote the organization, events, programs, services and impact (including planning, advertising, public relations, event organization, development, distribution, sponsorship and research)

Passion for the mission of HI-USA
Results oriented with 5+ years in non-profit leadership with experience in fund development
Ability to comfortably relate to major donors and prospects
Knowledge of and ability to adapt best practices to facilitate development goals
Strong project management skills to facilitate planning, leading and managing development projects, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior management and the Board of Directors
Excellent organizational and project management skills with good attention to detail
Strong relationship building and personal solicitation skills required
Highly persuasive with a genuine demeanor and exceptional written/verbal communication skills essential
Bachelor’s degree in human services, marketing, or related fields preferred.
Must be able to use a computer at a work station for long periods of time and accommodate potentially frequent interruptions. Some travel will be required.
