Founded in 1868, the College of Natural Resources (CNR) is the first land grant college in California and the oldest college on the Berkeley campus. Its academic, research and outreach programs include the environment, natural resources, agriculture and human health. The College consists of the Dean's Office, five academic departments/programs with 120 faculty, 2,400 students both undergraduate and graduate, 200 staff and over 19,000 alumni and key constituent audiences representing the nonprofit, private and government sectors. At CNR, we study natural and human systems from biological, ecological, economic, and social science perspectives. We engage the issues that shape the complex, interconnected world of the 21st century, from sustainable food systems to obesity, from water policy to energy policy, and from the far-reaching impacts of climate change to the linkages between the human genome, diet, and disease.
The Office of College Relations in the Dean's Office plans and implements a coordinated external affairs program for the College, with primary emphasis on development, alumni relations, special events and communications.
The Director of Development reports to the Assistant Dean of Development and Public Information and is responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation of major gift and planned giving level prospective donors. The Director is responsible for developing and administering fundraising programs working closely with the Dean, Assistant Dean and academic leadership of the College. S/he identifies new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, marketing plans, and organizing related programs/events; cultivates, stewards, and solicits donor prospects.
The Development Director Participates in all aspects of the gift cycle:
• Initiates contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors as well as annual fund donors. • Develops appropriate cultivation strategies including working with faculty and volunteers • Moves potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion towards solicitation and closure • Makes solicitations when appropriate • Maintains stewardship contacts with donors, adheres to the highest ethical standards, demonstrates empathetic disposition, and perseverance, reflects optimistic and positive attitude and conveys sensitivity to the needs of the donors
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in the field and expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations and public relations • Expert ability to develop and structure complex gifts; proven track record of success in direct solicitation • Advanced skill in building prospect portfolio, knowledge of how to research, identify and cultivate new donors • Experience in successful relationship-building with prospects, key faculty and staff, volunteers, and board members • Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus/College goals/objectives and in securing gifts • Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, and demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers. • Expertise in developing persuasive written materials from diverse, unstructured written and oral information • Advanced analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills. • Ability to successfully deal with confidential, complex situations involving coordination and consultation with high level constituents • Demonstrated sound judgment, tact, and a proven record of effective initiative. • Knowledge of the campus and college's vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure • Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as well as regional travel required.
• Knowledge of fundraising in a campaign at an academic institution • Basic understanding of academic content related to his/her assigned division
