Under the direction of the Vice President/Controller, the Assistant Controller provides leadership and direction over the month end/year end closing process for a $50 million dollar a year organization. The Assistant Controller reviews the financial statements on a monthly basis to ensure the statements are presented according to GAAP requirements and identifies and researches significant variances prior to closing and review by Vice President/Controller. This position leads and manages the accounts payable function which processes over $20 million in disbursements per year, the bi-weekly payroll function which consists of paying over 2,500 staff per pay period with total payroll costs exceeding $25 million annually and the accounts receivable function which consists of providing oversight and direction over the invoicing and collection of about $1.5 million in various state and local grants.
The Assistant Controller manages and directs the bookkeeping/accounting function for various YMCA of Greater Indianapolis partnerships. This includes the preparation of partnership financial statements, overseeing the monthly or quarterly billing process and the managing of the annual audit process specific to these partnerships. The Assistant Controller is also responsible for preparing the financial statements for the YMCA Foundation of Greater Indianapolis which is a separate legal entity and consists of approximately $18 million in net assets.
The Assistant Controller will ensure that internal controls and policies in financial reporting mechanisms are followed by leading, designing and conducting internal audits throughout the year. This position is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of all assigned general ledger account reconciliations. The Assistant Controller will be involved in the annual budgeting process by assisting branch staff in data collection and analysis. Special duties and projects assigned as appropriate.
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, MBA or CPA designation a plus; thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures. 5-7 years of accounting and supervisory experience required. Experience in the finance function in a leadership Capacity with knowledge of the not-for-profit environment desirable. Strong oral and written communication abilities, solid analytical and technical skills; strong working knowledge of MS Office, Excel and QuickBooks. Ability to create reports and /or conduct data mining from current systems in order to provide management with information necessary to make sound business decisions and/or solve problems. Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial reporting, etc.)
