Mikva Challenge is a national nonpartisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop youth to be informed, empowered, and active citizens and community leaders. We do this by engaging youth in action civics, an authentic and transformative learning process built on youth voice and youth expertise. We are a dynamic youth empowerment agency that provides high school students with unique civic learning opportunities and “hands-on” experiences in political campaigns, public policy advocacy, government internships, and youth activism programs.
Mikva Challenge is seeking a candidate who has passion for our youth civic leadership work to join our team as a manager of the Teen Health Council (THC) City Youth Council. This position is located at the Chicago chapter of Mikva Challenge and reports to the Citywide Youth Council (CYC) Senior Program Director
Specific responsibilities will include:
Planning and facilitating year-round youth council meetings, including an intensive 6-week “think-tank” summer program
This includes lesson planning, developing activities, creatively adding to Mikva’s existing curriculum
Recruiting youth to participate in program and building strong, positive relationships with participants
Creating innovative and effective retention strategies to support youth participants through the program
Facilitating for youth to access legal, medical, and/or social-emotional support services as needed
Collaborating with the Mikva Challenge Teacher-Based Team to implement student-led youth wellness programs in local schools
Lead and participate in the planning and execution of annual youth summit
Building relationships with key stakeholders connected to council in order to advance council projects, including but not limited to the Chicago Department of Public Health, the Chicago Public Schools Office of Student Health and Wellness, and the Chicago Public Schools Office of Social and Emotional Learning
This also includes cultivating and managing these stakeholders on a regular basis
Maintaining past campaigns pertaining but not limited to: Chicago Wears Condoms, behavioral health resource guide and toolkit, and health promotion pilot programs
Being an “expert in the field”and attending meetings, etc that pertain to youth and adolescent health as well as youth engagement
Leadership and participation in other large Mikva Challenge events (Project Soapbox, Youth Summit, Action Civics Showcase)
Communicating successes of program to internal communications team and development team and externally to media or decision makers as needed
Evaluating program and writing reports for internal and external audiences
Achieving agreed-upon programmatic goals
Supporting development team as needed on grants, contracts, and other initiatives to support the program
This includes advising on grants, prospecting grants, meeting
with funders, and potentially some grant writing
All other duties as assigned
A bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
5+ years experience in one or a combination of advocacy, government, public health, and youth programming
Demonstrated ability to write and implement curriculum and programming that promotes positive youth development
Strong public speaking and workshop facilitation skills
Experienced user of Microsoft Office products (Excel and Word), Google Drive, and social media
Valid Driver’s License
The purpose of the Citywide Youth Councils (CYC’s) are to strengthen youth participation in the formation, implementation, and evaluation of public policy in city government through the creation of issue-based youth councils. The seven youth councils serve as youth policy experts and advocates, helping the Mayor, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools, the Cook County Board President, City Commissioners, CEO of the Chicago Housing Authority and other city leaders as they make public policy decisions that significantly impact youth. The councils also serve as a mechanism for a broader base of Chicago youth to have input on key city policy decisions that affect them.
We are looking for a Teen Health Council Manager with experience and/or interest in youth and adolescent health policy and programs, youth development, and youth civic engagement. The ideal candidate will have experience as a youth worker, as well as governmental or advocacy experience, especially as it relates to public health. They should be motivated to empower young adults with a strong empathic ability to connect with youth without judgement. Candidate should be able to think on their feet and take a holistic approach to supporting youth in the program. Solid knowledge of the critical health policy and health issues facing Chicago youth, students in Chicago schools, government, and youth development skills are major assets, or a willingness to become an expert in these areas. Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders with a range of perspectives is critical. Should be highly organized and have excellent research skills, and oral and written communication skills are required. High energy and a willingness to be flexible and creative is a must.
A strong belief in the potential of youth, as well as a commitment to youth power and voice is key. Enthusiasm, energy, flexibility, and the ability to work independently as well as on a team are also important qualities.
