Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) has been providing legal services to the community since 1973, and while our reach has expanded beyond the Cabrini Green neighborhood, our focus has narrowed to working for and alongside individuals, families and communities impacted by the direct and collateral consequences of the criminal justice system. Each year, over 6,000 people access CGLA’s services to remove or prevent barriers to employment and education caused by pending criminal cases and past criminal records and to stabilize families and housing threatened by arrest or conviction. Through zealous legal services, social supports and systemic advocacy, CGLA seeks to strengthen individual lives, protect families, and mobilize communities impacted by arrest and incarceration.
The Development Manager of Donor Relations and Special projects works with the Executive Director to create and direct the department’s priorities and strategies with the goals of increasing visibility, increasing donor engagement and retention, and financial gifts (both in number and size). This person is responsible for the creation and management of a well-coordinated individual and major gifts program designated to cultivate and solicit support from individuals and family foundations. The person works closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, development staff, program staff and other volunteers to strengthen existing relationships and establish new relationships with individual donors with a focus on major gifts. The person will also work with the Director of Development to improve the Development department’s processes and procedures with the goal of improving cross-departmental operations. The Development Manager of Donor Relations and Special Projects is responsible for the on-going growth and success of CGLA’s fundraising events and donor relationship cultivation. With the direction of the Director of Development and the Executive Director, the person will take the lead in the execution, fundraising and volunteer engagement of CGLA’s major events.
Individual Donor Cultivation:
Collaborate with the Board of Directors, Executive Director and staff to create and implement a fund development plan which increases revenues to support the strategy direction of the organization;
Grow a major gifts program, including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors on behalf of the organization;
Cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors with a clear and achievable solicitation and stewardship strategy through participation in all aspects of the gift cycle:
Initiate contacts and meet with existing and potential major gift donors
Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
Make solicitations when appropriate
Maintain stewardship contacts with donors, demonstrate positive attitude, ethical standards and sensitivity to the needs of the donors
Engage Executive Director and Board members where appropriate and relevant to building relationships and stewarding of major donors.
Manage relationships and portfolio with at least 100 current donors, while building a roster of 50-75 new donor prospects annually;
Manage donor profiles and the acknowledgement of and communication with all donors, including all direct mail and electronic appeals to individual donors annually (phone, mail and in person); and
Provide direct support staffing to the Executive Director for major donor related responsibilities (ex. Scheduling meetings with donors, writing donor communications, etc.)
Develop and maintain CGLA’s major fundraising events (Annual Benefit, YPB Wine Tasting, Appeals and others);
Create financial goals for events to increase revenues and opportunities for donor solicitations;
Coordinate communication and marketing tools for fundraising events;
Engage in post-event follow up to cultivate and steward potential donor relationships;
Identify opportunities to network with donors and prospects and engage members of the staff and board as appropriate to maximize opportunities;
Develop a donor recognition plan, which includes the creation and management of donor recognition initiatives;
Actively engage the CGLA Boards, (Governing Board, Young Professionals and Advisory Board) in revenue generating events/activities that will build donor solicitation;
Work with leadership and program staff to initiate and engage in opportunities and events in the broader community, corporate and legal sectors.
Additional Revenue Generating Strategies:
In partnership with Director of Development and Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations, develop and implement a marketing roundtable to ensure individual donor strategies are integrated into appropriate communications, marketing channels and tools;
Monitor and report revenues and expenses associated with individual/major giving strategies;
Maintain accurate records of all donor communications.
Set comprehensive and achievable financial targets to raise and maintain gifts over $100k and/or in the six-figure range;
Represent CGLA at community meetings and events;
Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings and events;
Meet deadlines and stay actively engaged in budget monitoring (maintaining communications with Director of Development and accounting);
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
Have 5 years of Development and nonprofit experience;
Experience with writing grants and donor relationship cultivation
Have a strong track record of success;
Experience managing multiple special projects
Have excellent attendance; flexibility to attend meetings/events outside regular business hours;
Be proficient in Microsoft Word & Excel (intermediate to advanced knowledge required)
Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge Development Software
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills and eagerness to work in a team environment;
Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to achieve results;
Ability to represent the organization positively in public at all times as an ambassador;
Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Razor’s Edge;
Self-motivated with creative problem solving skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize work to meet critical deadlines;
Have a clear understanding and passion for CGLA’s mission and vision and support the mission and goals of the organization across all programs and departments;
Able to work well under pressure;
Superior interpersonal skills; comfortable working with an diverse population;
Must be willing to travel.
Required Hours: Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm, 40 hours per week.
Physical Requirements: None.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a typical office environment. May require some weekend and evening work.
