The Director of Alumni Relations Programs is responsible for developing and managing strategic programming that will sustain engagement with alumni, graduating students and friends of the University of Hawai'i (UH) system for the purpose of enhancing the lifelong relationship of these constituents with their campuses and UH. This position works closely with University of Hawai‘i Foundation staff to develop a strategy and implementation plan for meaningful and valuable programs that contribute to the brand and build pride for UH. Ideally, these programs meet the unmet needs of UH and its alumni.
The position must ensure that the University of Hawai‘i Foundation (UHF) continually cultivates a symbiotic relationship with the University, its campuses and leadership, and increases engagement of alumni in demonstrated and measurable ways.
The responsibilities include: organizing, planning and implementing programs toward defined, strategic outcomes; establishing communication vehicles to support alumni and their relationships with each other and the campuses; establishing programs that engage current students and young alumni with UH and each other, and engaging alumni regionally working closely with the campus alumni engagement team.
Vice President of Marketing and Communications – Alumni and Donor Relations
Develop and create, in consultation with the University of Hawai‘i Foundation Vice President, Marketing and Communications – Alumni and Donor Relations, a compelling, practical vision for alumni relations programming that advances the mission of the University and UHF.
Oversee regional and international alumni engagement activities in coordination with other alumni engagement staff, UHF development, system and campus leadership, and alumni volunteers in various regions.
Forge strong alliances with the alumni engagement team, UHF development and other UHF staff to secure greater alumni commitment to University of Hawai‘i programs and enhance services to alumni and friends.
Implement programming that represents alumni interests within the context of broader advancement goals of the university.
Develop and implement programs to strengthen alumni-to-university, alumni-to-alumni, and alumni-to-student networks working closely with UHF and campus staff on engagement programs that will raise the visibility of UH and campus excellence, build pride, and turn alumni into brand ambassadors for UH.
Manage all aspects of the program from development, implementation and execution. Develop a strategic plan and a program manual for each program.
Programs may include and are not limited to: Career Development and Mentorship, Young Alumni, Parent Engagement, Lifelong Learning, Regional Activities.
Develop programs to increase student involvement with alumni.
Coordinate program development and activities in collaboration with alumni engagement staff, Foundation and campus leadership/staff.
Analyze quarterly alumni demographic reports. Implement strategies to continually improve alumni engagement and participation numbers.
Provide guidance in best practices in the alumni relations profession and benchmark the alumni relations program against its peers.
Ensure adequate planning, systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls to provide appropriate risk management and compliance with federal, state, and local statutes, university policies, practices, and established guidelines, and principles of prudent management.
Develop an annual business plan and budget. Develop and achieve measurable goals and objectives in fulfillment of the organization’s strategic direction.
Cultivate an ethical and compassionate environment of accountability, collegiality, and teamwork to support the goals of the organization and create a sense of partnership between staff and volunteers.
Undertake other duties and special projects as assigned.
The Director will meet annually with his/her supervisor to put in place a plan for the year. At the end of each year, the Director and his/her supervisor will review progress toward the annual goals.

Minimum of three years successful experience in constituent engagement, alumni relations, communications, or related field.
An appreciation for and understanding of public higher education, and the ability to advance and communicate the University of Hawai‘i’s distinctive identity and mission to external and internal constituencies, especially alumni.
Demonstrated successful leadership and management skills to motivate, guide, and direct staff.
Requires a friendly, collaborative leadership style that is well suited to management in a complex university setting.Ability to plan and implement programmatic, organizational, administrative and financial strategies and goals.
A proven record of accomplishment in building engagement programs through direct marketing, electronic media and event marketing is highly desirable.
Proven leadership skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with management, peers, customers, and volunteers.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are necessary, with a philosophy of teamwork and hands on implementation.
Ability to be flexible and work with all types of individuals.
Ability to work collaboratively with various campus and UHF partners, volunteers, and constituent groups.
Project management skills are preferred.
The position requires a highly detail oriented and organized individual.
This position at times requires evening and weekend work.
A passion for higher education, and for the University of Hawai‘i in particular.
Willingness to travel; must have use of own automobile. Able to work some nights and weekends.

Based at the University of Hawai‘i Foundation, located on University of Hawaii Manoa campus on the Island of Oahu, the position may involve travel. Domestic and possible international travel, subject to overnight and weekend stays. Most travel will be by auto, but occasionally by other modes of transportation. Employee must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record and passport for international travel. This position at times requires extensive evening and weekend work and the employee must be able to work to the demands of the position, which may exceed a 40 hour work week. Heavy lifting up to 40 lbs. may be required at times.

They must respect donor privacy, have a thorough grasp of the complexity and impacts of a university system and understand the unique qualities of each campus, analyze data effectively, and ideally have a good sense of humor. They must be a good listener, a good communicator, and an inspirational collaborative leader. Positive working relationships and professional conduct both internally and externally is a requirement.
