Do you have a passion for the outdoors? Do you want to help ensure the growth and success of the outdoor industry? If so, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is looking to fill a two-year Wyss Fellowship position that will help scale OIA’s state and local advocacy work, which aims to engage OIA business members in advocacy around funding and access for outdoor recreation in the West. The ideal candidate is digitally and politically savvy, has a track-record of engaging constituents and a desire to harness the power of business for meaningful change. We want individuals who bring a passion for the outdoors to their work.
Build and support coalitions of industry professionals, nonprofit leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to effectively advocate for outdoor recreation at the state and local levels.
Help develop and facilitate the use of Outdoor Industry Association online engagement tools.
Plan and deliver a series of educational modules and tools that highlight examples of close-to-home recreation, advance policy goals and train outdoor industry professionals to effectively engage their local officials.
Validate, support or provide resources to state and local planning efforts.
Develop action alerts and issue briefs, position statements and other communication materials.
Support ongoing grassroots organizing and coalition building in support of OIA’s state and local advocacy goals.
Participate in and help plan industry and OIA events such as Outdoor Retailer, Capitol Summit and smaller regional events around the country, including at multiple state capitols during upcoming legislative sessions.
Assist with the development of a suite of educational tools and resources for our members and partners, which will be hosted on outdoorindustry.org/advocacy.
Monitor state legislation and local initiatives across the country that are relevant to OIA’s policy agenda and develop communications around them as appropriate.
Represent OIA at industry trade shows and other events that OIA hosts or sponsors.
Stipend and Duration
OIA will pay the selected Fellow a $45,000 annual stipend plus OIA’s excellent benefits package. The fellowship duration is two years with an anticipated start date of January 2018.

At least 1 year of work or volunteer experience in state or local public policy work, campaigns or government affairs, preferably including experience working on public lands and recreation policy
Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental studies or a related field
Self-motivated, energetic, disciplined and a fast learner
Well-organized and detail-oriented with an ability to prioritize and work independently as you grow into this role
Strong writing and verbal communication skills
Exposure to land management agencies and the policymaking process
Communications, community-organizing and policy or legislative experience
Competence with basic online collaboration and workflow tools and an interest in learning more: Salesforce, WordPress, bill-tracking and advocacy software
An avid interest in conservation and a personal connection to the outdoors
The Fellow will be provided work space and general support at OIA headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. Some travel in the West and to Washington, D.C., will be required.
