Overview of the Center for Social Sector Leadership (CSSL)
The Center for Social Sector Leadership inspires the next generation of leaders to create and seize opportunities to achieve social impact across sectors. CSSL achieves this for degree-program students on the Berkeley campus, and for other leaders and students we touch through our external programs, described briefly below.
CSSL is an internationally recognized leader in social impact education and action, and is ranked #2 in Best Business Schools Specialty Rankings for Nonprofit Management in the most recent rankings conducted by US News and World Report.
Key CSSL activities:
Classes Student learning is at the core of our mission. We offer a robust portfolio of courses taught by a distinguished faculty of practitioners, researchers and established leaders in the field.
Experiential Learning An array of hands-on fieldwork opportunities for students to grapple with the issues facing the nonprofit and public sectors. Students strengthen their skills while developing mission-critical projects for leading edge organizations. One example is our Social Sector Solutions experiential class, taught in conjunction with McKinsey and Company. Another example is the non-credit Berkeley Board Fellows program we run with local nonprofit organizations.
Partnerships and Programs CSSL has initiated groundbreaking partnerships with groups like Philanthropy University, which provides top-quality, free online training for nonprofit managers around the world. We also launched and run the Social Impact Collective, which provides insight and community for high net worth families on their philanthropy and impact investing. CSSL also helps to run our Global Social Venture Competition.
Research The Center conducts research on cutting edge issues including multi-sector leadership, nonprofit networks, social capital and social impact assessment.
Events CSSL hosts a number of events that range from panel discussions on social impact that are open to the public, to the Future of Social Ventures conference.

Overview of the Associate Director role
The Associate Director plays a key leadership role for CSSL, directing all core administrative operations such as budgeting, HR and compliance with Berkeley and Berkeley-Haas policies and procedures, playing a key role in marketing and marketing operations, providing general program support and management across all center activities.
Manages, plans and administers a range of administrative operations in a small to medium academic department, or a small to medium non-academic department or program. Administrative operations include budgetary financial management and human resources and some of the following functions: IT, facilities, student services, and/or contracts and grants. Provides input and assistance with non-technical portions of grant and contract proposals and reports Coordinates and participates in a variety of human resources activities including employment, training, classification and ensuring the completion of forms and documents related to HR and Payroll for unit/department. May supervise a small staff of support employees and/or students. Serves on committees, representing department/unit. Assists in the design, drafting and ongoing management of organizational website content, social media and general center marketing; drafts newsletters and correspondence to organizational constituents. Develops and implements procedures for supply inventory and to keep equipment in good working condition. Manages portions of center programs•Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, account and fund management, personnel management. •Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees. •Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activities such as events planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines. •Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. •Knowledge of general marketing, social media and website management •Program management skills •Team-building skills •Interpersonal communication skills to include verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. •Strong skills in short term planning, analysis and problem-solving and customer service. Education/Training: •Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training •MBA, MPP or other related masters degree preferred
