The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Policy Department with the Pride Action Tank. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.
The Pride Action Tank Intern will directly assist the Pride Action Tank team with a wide range of projects, including #HireTrans, a new program focused on getting companies to employ transgender workers, and to get nonprofit boards to be trans inclusive, as well as other projects such as Ava’s Change 4 Youth, OutAging summit, Chicago Restroom Access Project and other pop-up projects. The Pride Action Tank Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy, and other issues related to AFC’s mission.
This person will work closely with the Pride Action Tank Executive Director and Project Coordinator.
This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills acquired in the educational setting and apply them in a professional setting. Upon completion of this internship, the Pride Action Tank Intern should have an understanding of LGBTQI programs and issues, with a focus on transgender people, and the role policy and advocacy play in the nonprofit setting.
The Pride Action Tank Intern will learn:
Best practices in social media with an advocacy lens
Broad issues within the LGBTQ community
Project tracking and time management
Research and note taking methods and skills
Nonprofit and organizational systems
Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in public health, communications and public policy.
Interest in and familiarity with the transgender community and LGBTQ issues.
Interest in social justice.
Able to work independently, and to also work in a collaborative environment.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Enjoy working with the public in community settings.
Must be flexible and open to new opportunities to engage a variety of stakeholders.
Experience with and proficiency in Word, Excel, and social media platforms.
This internship is unpaid (stipend available). Details will be provided during the interview process. AFC can also help interns obtain college credit, if available from your school. Interns will receive necessary training and staff supervision. Internships require at least 15 hours/week for a minimum of 12 weeks, though longer internships are preferred. Public health, communications and public policy majors are encouraged to apply.

Anyone can become infected with HIV, but HIV and related chronic diseases disproportionately impact certain populations in distinct geographic areas. We can have the greatest impact on the HIV epidemic by focusing our efforts on those most-impacted by HIV, based on epidemiological data and unmet need:
• Young Black gay and bisexual men
• Transgender women of color
• Black women living in high-incidence areas
• Latino gay and bisexual men
Factors that drive the HIV epidemic and health inequities that we will address include:
