The Major Gift Officer is a mission-critical role serving as the key steward for a rich portfolio of current and prospective philanthropists in support of Yellowstone National Park. This position will be expected to meet annual revenue targets by identifying, engaging, cultivating, and ultimately soliciting major gifts from regional donors, thereby advancing the organizational mission and creating meaningful impact in the lives of both donors and the beneficiaries of the mission of Yellowstone Forever and Yellowstone National Park. This position is an opportunity for a highly motivated development professional to build and manage a portfolio of donors capable of making five and six-figure gifts, as well as to help Yellowstone Forever grow its major gifts program toward the seven-figure range. The Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of a portfolio of approximately 150 individual major gift prospects in the southeastern, northeastern and/or midwestern region of the United States. The Major Gifts Officer is required to secure a minimum of $1,000,000 annually. The position reports to the Chief Development Officer for Yellowstone Forever.
Develop a thorough understanding of the culture and constituency of Yellowstone Forever and the ethos and practices of Yellowstone National Park.
Plan, direct and participate as appropriate in the solicitation of assigned planned and major gift prospects. Annual guidelines for cultivation and solicitation of prospects will include the following:
100+ face-to-face visits,
Personally visiting between 16 to 20 prospects each month with the goal of soliciting 30 to 35 prospects annually,
Identify new major gift prospects for outright gifts, primarily among individuals,
Prepare written and oral presentations,
Prepare an annual Plan of Action report,
$900,000 - $1,200,000 in solicitations (targeting 35 or more proposals for outright gifts, planned gifts and pledges),
$1,000,000 in gifts secured annually
Formulate and implement appropriate strategies to continuously build the interest of major and/or planned gift prospects and donors in supporting Yellowstone Forever
Identify prospects capable of making major annual gifts of at least $50,000+
Participate in the formulation of the Development Office objectives and development of annual fundraising plans, strategies, timetables, and budgets required to achieve those objectives
Create and implement personalized cultivation/stewardship plans and gift requests for each donor within portfolio, to be based on their philanthropic focus and maximizing their giving to Yellowstone Forever; ensure portfolio receives timely and accurate proposals, narrative and financial reports, invitations to events and other cultivation and stewardship communications
Assist as needed in the identification, cultivation, and recruitment of volunteer solicitors
Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively
Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers and partners
Travel to Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required
Other tasks as assigned by Chief Development Officer, or other designated leadership
A bachelor’s degree
At least 10 years of professional experience with 5 of those in major gift fundraising, including personal solicitations with documented record of productivity
Deep appreciation of Yellowstone National Park and an understanding of the challenges the park is currently facing
Highly energetic with a track record of building relationships and closing gifts above $10,000
Aptitude to determine an individual’s interest, capacity, and inclination to help Yellowstone Forever meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with Yellowstone National Park
Ability to work in an environment that places an emphasis on metrics and success
Proven capability to work independently and as a part of a team
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be a self-starter
Experience managing multiple projects (determining priorities and maintaining a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality)
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Strong organizational and analytical skills
Flexible approach to work with a willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, when necessary
Ability to work from a home office and travel extensively across the United States
Demonstrated ability to work with teams, cross functionally and with high-level volunteers
Ability to represent YF and its mission in a courteous and professional manner
This position may involve driving YF vehicles, therefore applicants must hold and maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes
A satisfactory criminal background check are conditions of employment
Significant fundraising experience in a national conservation NGO setting
Proven autonomous self-starter, maintaining flexibility and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision
Experience working in a complex matrix organization
Knowledge of Yellowstone National Park

Additional Salary Information: This is a full-time, year-round position, which should be based as a teleworker in either the southeastern, northeastern, or midwestern region of the United States. Travel throughout the region and to Yellowstone is required. This is an exempt position with a competitive salary, based upon experience.
