The Harley School, a Nursery through 12th grade coed independent day school in Rochester, NY with approximately 500 students (www.harleyschool.org), seeks a full-time Director of Development. The successful candidate will join Harley at an exciting time in the School’s centennial year. The Harley Board has completed a comprehensive strategic plan and is committed to the Lives of Great Purpose fundraising campaign to support its strategic objectives. The Development Office has acted on recommendations from a Development Audit (2014) and a Feasibility Study (2016) and has retained Marts & Lundy as counsel for the campaign. We are testing three fundraising goals totaling $10 million with leadership donors at this time. Following a recent resignation, we are seeking a new Director of Development to join us as initial commitments are being made.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Establish and execute forward-thinking, goal-driven development plans and programs that optimally grow the annual, major, planned giving, and capital campaigns.
Oversee all aspects of the development program including grants, alumni, special events, and database. Plan for the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors and the stewardship of donors at all levels.
Personally solicit major donors after developing relationships through outreach and travel.
Identify, recruit, and train the volunteers necessary to help with fundraising efforts.
Design and implement targeted events, with the assistance of the Special Events Coordinator.
Continuously improve alumni programming, working closely with the Alumni Director.
Maintain a database of all contributors and provide development reports, with the Database Manager.
Identify and secure corporate and foundation grants, with the Grants Committee.
Prepare and arrange production for solicitation materials, with the Marketing and Communications Director.
Manage the development budget, forecasting needs and meeting budget targets.
Serve on and support the Development Committee, Governance Committee, Advancement Team, and Administrative Team.
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
8+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including management of fundraising campaigns
Appreciation for and commitment to independent school education and culture
A track record of success in a major gift or capital campaign environment is necessary, along with demonstrated ability to develop and implement 5-, 6-, and 7-figure gift strategies
Ability to develop and execute a high-level, multi-tiered fundraising strategy across multiple constituencies
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work graciously with all the School’s constituents while maintaining discretion and confidentiality
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong data analysis and public speaking abilities
Strategic thinker with a “can-do” style, able to convey Harley’s mission and vision, while taking the practical decisions needed to make programs run well
Proficiency using database management software (Raisers Edge at Harley) to coordinate campaign activities. Proficiency with MS Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Familiarity with the Greater Rochester community
